Changes to the German Veterinary Fee Schedule (GOT)

The German federal government uses the Veterinary Fee Schedule ("Gebührenordnung für Tierärztinnen und Tierärzte", GOT) to set a uniform fee framework for veterinary services across Germany. Fees may neither fall below nor exceed this framework. As of November 2022, the GOT was adjusted for the first time since 1999. In the meantime, every area of veterinary medicine has developed significantly, alongside ever more sophisticated technical equipment. This complex, demanding standard of veterinary care naturally comes at a cost. As a result, the new GOT introduces not only many new billable services, but entirely new fee levels as well.

By European standards, veterinary prices in Germany had been considerably lower, which meant practice staff could not be paid adequately. The consequence, as in many professions, has been a growing shortage of skilled staff, reduced availability, and even practice and clinic closures. Good care for your animals can only be guaranteed with sufficient staff, which is why the GOT adjustment was urgently needed.
